[+] 17 October 2012 - BTIG Hires Leading UK Trader to Expand European Operations - Eddie Benson to Head BTIG's European Salestrading

New York - October 17, 2012 â€" BTIG LLC, a global financial services firm specializing in institutional trading and related brokerage services, has hired Eddie Benson to help run its expanding European operations. Benson, who most recently traded for clients at Deutsche Bank, will serve as managing director and BTIG's head of European salestrading, a newly-created position.

"Hiring Eddie represents a major coup for BTIG," said Matthew Cyzer, president and head of European equities. "Having worked alongside him at Deutsche Bank for many years, I consider him to be, quite simply, the best in the business. His experience, enthusiasm and deep client relationships are unmatched and will be hugely beneficial as we continue to expand our European business."

Benson comes to BTIG with three decades of experience as a London-based trader. Starting out at Rowe and Pitman in 1981, he quickly established himself as one of the youngest members of the London Stock Exchange. After SG Warburg merged with Rowe and Pitman, Benson ran the firm's option floor broking business from 1986 to 1990 and later ran Warburg's European Equity salestrading desk.

Benson joined Deutsche Bank in 1996 to help build their European Equity platform, and until 2005, ran Deutsche's International Salestrading team, which at the time was the largest franchise in Europe by revenue. At its peak, Benson had a staff of roughly 200 traders and salespeople reporting to him.

After 2006, Benson focused on pure client coverage for Deutsche, and became one of the largest revenue-producing salestraders in Europe. At BTIG, he will continue to cover many of the most significant and successful clients in the world. He's particularly known for his US-based institutional relationships, which BTIG believes are unparalleled in terms of longevity and quality across the equity spectrum.

"Eddie's hire reaffirms BTIG's commitment, not just to the further build out of its European equity franchise but its commitment generally to the highest levels of client service," said XXX at BTIG. "We don't think it's an exaggeration to say that BTIG couldn't have hired anybody who better embodies its culture and client philosophy than Eddie."

[+] 15 August 2011 - BTIG Adds Outsource Trading In Asia

Hong Kong â€" August 15, 2011 â€" BTIG Hong Kong Limited, an affiliate of BTIG, LLC, a global financial services firm specialising in institutional trading and related brokerage services, today announced that it has launched its Outsource Trading Desk and related services to clients in Asia, expanding BTIG's Global Outsource Trading team. BTIG's Outsource Trading Desk allows hedge fund managers to outsource their internal trading functions using BTIG's buyside trading desk, which enables investment managers, regardless of size, to leverage the firm's experienced 16-person global team.

The outsource service can be tailored to the individual needs of each client, which means BTIG can act as the sole trading arm, supplement an in-house desk, handle overflow on heavy trading days or provide coverage when in-house traders are unavailable.

The new Asia desk, which is being spearheaded by BTIG Executive Director Trevor Harrison, follows the launch of BTIG's Outsource Trading Desk in Sydney, Australia, 18 months ago. The Outsource Trading Desk in the United States has been operating for nine years. Globally, BTIG's Outsource Trading Desk handles more than 140 clients.

Jesse Lentchner, BTIG Chief Executive Officer for Asia Pacific, said, "BTIG understands the challenges facing fund managers who want to execute their global strategies and grow their managed assets without having to build out a dedicated in-house trading desk. BTIG's Outsource Trading Desk provides these managers not only with a valuable service, but also with instant trading expertise."

Larger established managers and small emerging hedge funds are both gravitating towards this outsource trading model as their underlying investors demand that they operate with lower and more flexible cost structures. BTIG's Outsource Trading Desk allows managers to avoid the fixed cost of maintaining and managing employees and technology in other countries while still getting dedicated attention to execute their trading orders.

Added Harrison, "We believe much of the growth in the Asia-based Outsource Trading service will come from new manager launches. New managers will choose outsource trading as an interim solution until their assets under management support hiring a bigger team. We also expect that existing fund managers will add BTIG as an extension of their internal dealing desk or as a substitute for employing one in-house. The outsource solution we provide allows investment managers to concentrate on what they do best â€" identifying new investment opportunities and managing current investments."

To find out more about BTIG's Outsource Trading service, please visit www.btig.com or call Trevor Harrison at +852 3416 5002.

[+] June 2008 - BTIG Bonds With Goldman Sachs

Traders Magazine

Agency brokerage BTIG LLC, following an investment last month by Goldman Sachs, is poised for growth.

The bicoastal broker-dealer, co-headed by a former Goldman trading executive, accepted a minority investment from the bulge bracket bank in order to bolster its image abroad and set an initial valuation for the firm.

"We thought it was important to have a strategic partner for the long run," Steve Starker, a BTIG co-founding partner, said. "This helps with our credibility overseas."

BTIG, the result of a merger three and a half years ago between two small brokers based in San Francisco and New York, has largely completed its US expansion. It is now looking to Europe and Asia for growth.

The firm recently hired 23 traders from the now-shuttered Hong Kong and Australian offices of E*Trade and has plans to open a London office by the end of the year. It expects to soon open its seventh, and last, domestic branch in Los Angeles.

Starker explained that BTIG could probably have funded its expansion by itself, but chose to go with Goldman for strategic reasons. "We are well known in the US," he said, "but there's a good chance that XYZ Fund in Hong Kong has not heard of us. That changes with Goldman on board."

Goldman was not the only interested party, Starker noted. Venture capitalists and at least one large international bank were also eager to invest in the rapidly growing BTIG. The firm now has about 175 employees, including the 23 overseas.

Goldman was the last to knock on BTIG's door but won the brass ring. Neither are strangers to each other. Starker spent three and a half years with Goldman after his firm Spear, Leeds & Kellogg was bought by Goldman in 2000; he was a partner in charge of trading at SLK.

Goldman, in fact, played an important role in getting Starker's Bass Trading, one of BTIG's two predecessor firms, off the ground with a minority investment in 2003.

BTIG clears through Goldman's clearing group and also has an introducing brokerage relationship with Goldman as part of its prime brokerage operation. BTIG caters to many small hedge funds that Goldman does not work with.

For Goldman, the investment in BTIG is one of several the firm has made over the years in the trading arena. Goldman has taken stakes in the Archipelago ECN and the electronic agency brokerage UNX, as well as Eze Castle Software, an order management system vendor.

"Goldman saw this as an opportunity to invest in a high-touch agency model, which they don't have," Starker said.

BTIG will continue to operate as an independent firm, majority-owned by its employees. Goldman, whose investment is "less than 20 percent" of BTIG, does not have a seat on BTIG's board, nor any day-to-day involvement in its operations, Starker added.

Although Starker said there are no plans to sell BTIG anytime soon, the Goldman purchase does put a number on the firm that could be valuable down the road.

[+] May 2007 - Upstart Broker Thinks Big And Expands in New York

Traders Magazine

By Peter Chapman

A small firm is opening a huge trading floor. BTIG, the product of a merger two years ago between New York's Bass Trading and San Francisco's Baypoint Trading, is opening a 20,000-square-foot trading floor in midtown Manhattan this month.

The institutional broker-dealer employs only 100 or so staffers in six offices, but is moving onto a floor almost half the size of the floor at giant trading house Bear Stearns.

BTIG will house 88 trading professionals on its new floor and expects to add more as volumes grow.

"We have doubled our head count in the past 14 months," said Steve Starker, BTIG cofounder and head of the Bass Trading institutional effort, "and we plan to expand both our cash and derivatives businesses. We've had unbelievable growth in a very short time."

Starker is a former Goldman Sachs partner who ran the Nasdaq desk at Spear, Leeds & Kellogg. He spent three and a half years with Goldman after the firm's acquisition of Spear.

Starker runs BTIG with Scott Kovalik, a cofounder of Baypoint and the former head of trading at San Francisco's Montgomery Securities.

Starker said BTIG's high-touch, low-impact trading strategy is attractive to clients. The firm trades between 30 million and 40 million shares per day.

The firm provides agency executions-at about 3 cents per share for high-touch-to traditional money managers, hedge funds, program trading houses and statistical arbitrage houses. It crosses about 20 percent of its merchandise between naturals, minimizing market impact and information leakage.

The firm's goal, Starker explained, is to be considered a part of the group of specialty third-market firms that includes JonesTrading, Jefferies and Cantor Fitzgerald.

Those three firms operate sprawling networks of sales traders that tap into hundreds of accounts and cross much of their flow. JonesTrading, for instance, crosses about 40 percent of its order flow between naturals.

In a business that is going increasingly electronic and low-touch, according to Starker, there is still demand for human intermediation. "We're a natural crossing network," the exec said.

Originally geared to hedge funds, BTIG now gets 60 percent of its business from traditional money managers. That shift, over the past 18 months, accounts for much of the firm's growth.

As for the future, Starker predicted BTIG's volume will reach 50 million shares by year's end and its staff will continue to grow. Also by year's end, the firm will add offices in Chicago and Los Angeles.
